Touch of Eternity: How a Blessing at Noravank Moved Me to Tears

Among all the ancient stone monasteries and landscapes in Armenia, Noravank Monastery stands out with its raw, haunting beauty. Many people are impressed by its location surrounded by brick-red canyon walls, a place where the earth meets the heavens. But for me, it wasn’t just the nature or the architecture, it was an unexpected moment of spiritual experience while visiting inside the side chapel.

While most visitors were taking photos outside, I stepped into the Surb Karapet (St. Karapet) Church. The room was bathed in soft light piercing through the narrow dome, smelling of faint incense and ancient stone. There, away from the crowds, I met a resident priest.

Without a single word needed, he motioned me forward. He started chanting in Classical Armenian (Grabar). Then ,he placed his hand gently upon my forehead, continued praying in a low chanting. As the deep, rhythmic vibrations echoed off the centuries-old stone walls, he touched my forehead with a heavy, cold cross. Finally, he extended the cross to my lips to kiss—a traditional Armenian Apostolic rite of profound trust and veneration (Veneration of the Cross).

There were no commercial gimmicks, no expectations, and no fluff. Just a pure, ancient connection between a traveler and a priest who guards a faith preserved through 1,600 years of hardship and isolation. Standing in that quiet stone chamber, feeling the cool metal against my lips, a wave of unexplainable warmth and deep emotion washed over me.

In that fleeting minute, time seemed to freeze. I left Noravank carrying not just memories and photos, but an intangible, priceless gift of inner peace—a silent blessing from the ancient heart of Armenia.
